Marshal Mathers aka Eminem

I was about 9 years old when I first time ever heard of Eminem. Since I didn’t speak any english back then, I had no clue what he was singing about. However, I could feel so much drive, passion, emotion, despite the fact I did not understand his lyrics, I was inspired by his music. It was just one of these rare feelings, where you could not explain why you enjoy certain things, you just do.

Eminem’s style is unique, unlike other rappers, I quickly realized he doesn’t rap about being rich, having unlimited powers, dating gorgeous women and driving fancy cars. He mostly points out what he has been throughout in his life, what became inspiration for others, and give them hope to pursue your passion and dreams no matter what are the circumstances, obstacles and regardless of your environment.

His rhymes are powerfully sick, full of emotions, drives and thoughts. The reason why Eminem incredibly easy turns phrases into rhymes, is that he thinks about them throughout the day and always tries to learn new words from the dictionaries. One of the interviewer asked him to do a rhymes with “orange”. His response was: “if you’re taking the word at face value, and you say orange, nothing is going to rhyme with it exactly . If you make it more than one syllable, you can say like: I put my orange – 4 inch – door hinge – in storage – and ate potage with george”… ”

Here are some of my favorites: “Lose yourself” – Probably Eminem’s the most recognizable song, Academy Award for Best Original Song. Surviving, while you have nothing in you pocket, at the end you are going to have a life opportunity, a big shot that you have no right and excuse to miss. One of the lines says: “you can do anything you set your mind to. Success is my only motherf***** option, failure’s not”. “Cleaning out my closet” – while being discriminated, hated by your own parents and made to believe you are mentally sick, still ignoring negative environment and forcing to be loyal to yourself, lines “My whole life I was made to believe I was sick when I wasn’t’’til I grew up, now I blew up, it makes you sick to ya stomach”.

“Not Afraid” – The number one song from his album named “Recovery”. It’s safe to say that the album is turning point on Eminem’s career and personal life as well. It was released in 2006, right after his best friend Proof (real name: DeShaun Holton) was killed at his hometown. Eminem as we all can assume could not handle Proof’s death very well, in fact started using drugs so often that it almost killed him.. Line from “Not afraid”: “It was my decision to get clean, I did it for me Admittedly, I probably did it subliminally For you, so I could come back a brand new me you helped see me through And don’t even realize what you did, ’cause believe me you”

Fortunately, my childhood was not the same as it was for Marshal Mathers, I never had to go through hateness, racial / social discrimination as Eminem had to. Having said that, despite of the difference, I believe  we all have a similar obstacles, same principles which we need to apply to ourselves in order to go up, raise spiritually and release our full potential.  I’ve been following him since beginning of this century, on top of that I’ve read his autobiography “Eminem – The Way I am“( link to the book ) I believe it’s safe to say, I do understand Eminem, I know where his greatness is coming from and what he had to go through in order to become the person he is right now. That’s the reason I have tremendous respect for Eminem, for his willingness to fight for his own place, strivness for his passion and loyalness for his destiny.

Needless to say Marshal Mathers had proved to this world, regardless of any circumstances, barriers, obstacles and racial disadvantages,  you can achieve anything you want to as long as you set your mind to.

“We all have only one shot one opportunity, do no slip it off.” – Eminem.
